Deodorant vs Antiperspirant

Which of these two body odor repellants really work? Which one is better or more effective in stopping excessive sweating and body odor?

Two ingredients of an antiperspirant that are used in blocking body pores where sweat gets out are aluminum and zirconium.
A deodorant is mainly used to stop body odor which can be noticed after sweating a lot. Deodorant halts the smell of sweat especially in your armpits but your underarms will still be wet since a deodorant does not block the body pores and does not stop the sweat from being discharged and reaching the skin.

Antiperspirant stops excessive sweating before body odor is produced. Two ingredients of an antiperspirant that are used in blocking body pores where sweat gets out are aluminum and zirconium.

Both deodorant and antiperspirant may be to used to get rid of body odor, but they work in two different ways. If you do not want to feel wet and develop body odor at the same time, you should use an antiperspirant. Deodorant is best for you if you do not feel comfortable in using something that would block the pores in their armpits. So the choice in using either a deodorant or antiperspirant really depends on your preference.

Deodorant and Antiperspirant Brands

Famous deodorant brands are Old Spice, Brut, Tom’s of Maine, Axe, Arm and Hammer, Right Guard, Jason Natural Cosmetics, Alba Botanica to name a few. Old Spice also makes antiperspirants called the Swagger Sweat Defense. An antiperspirant with a brand name of Maxim treats excessive sweating effectively and is very reliable in treating hyperhidrosis.

Most antiperspirants contain fragrance, but they also contain chemical compounds such as aluminum that block the pores to stop the release of perspiration. Antiperspirant brands use the line “no sweat, no odor” to promote the product. Deodorant, on the other hand, allows the release of perspiration but prevents odor by resisting it with antiseptic agents that kill odor-causing bacteria.

Harmful Ingredients in Some Deodorants and Antiperspirants

Whether you use deodorant or antiperspirant, it still important to bear in mind that both products may contain ingredients that are harmful to your health. An antiperspirant usually contains an aluminum formulation or aluminum compounds, which are health risks. Aluminum has been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, while parabens in deodorants have been linked to serious illnesses such as breast cancer. However, medical practitioners and different health agencies still recommend deodorant over an antiperspirant since they believe that blocking pores mostly through aluminum compounds than preventing perspiration may not be the healthiest choice.
